Introducing the...Hamster Wheel Desk?

Posted by Human Solution on Sep 30th 2014

There's no doubt about it - the treadmill desk has gone from being considered an office novelty to a widely-recommended fix for sedentary work days in a very short time. Of course, when an idea takes off, it always results in unique takes on the same concept, which can have...interesting results. One such result? Robb Godshaw and Will Doenlen's Hamster Wheel Standing Desk.

A collaborative effort at Autodesk's Pier 9 between Godshaw, an Artist-in-Residence, and Doenlen, a developer for Instructables.com, the Hamster Wheel Standing Desk is exactly what it sounds like - a human-sized hamster wheel (80" in diameter) that rotates around a height-adjustable desk, encouraging a slow, steady pace. The wheel is made from simple plywood, pipes, glue, and wood screws, sitting atop a 24" wide base that houses four skateboard wheels for smooth movement. Designed and built within 24 hours, the Hamster Wheel Standing Desk is certainly a sight to behold, though its user-friendliness leaves a bit to be desired (for example, the wheel lacks brakes entirely, which can obviously be a bit problematic if you build up more momentum than you intended to).

While the Hamster Wheel is certainly an eye-catching design, it's thankfully not the only option if you want to get up and get moving at work. Our UpLift Treadmill Desks offer plenty of flexibility if you want to switch between sitting and walking to break up the monotony of your workday. The included LifeSpan treadmill features an intuitive, easy-to-use desktop console, allowing you to not only manually adjust your walking speed, but track distance and calories burned as well. The console is even Bluetooth-enabled, allowing it to upload your workout statistics to the LifeSpan Fitness Club app for easy tracking. Of course, on top of all the features the treadmill offers, the UpLift Treadmill Desk can also be configured with a variety of different tops and finishes, letting it match interior designs other than "pet shop." With the UpLift Treadmill Desk, it's easy to get rolling during the workday in style!
