LED Task Light Review: The Humanscale Element Disc LED Task Light

One of my favorite ergonomic accessories also happens to be one of the most commonly overlooked by people looking to make their workspaces more ergonomic – a good task light.

Most offices rely on rows upon rows of large fluorescent overhead lights for office lighting. Unfortunately, these lights often fail to provide sufficient lighting for good visibility at your desk. LED task lights are a great way to not only liven up your office, but also alleviate eye strain while working and reading.

With the new Humanscale Element Disc LED Task Light, you can bring clean, bright, focused, long-lasting task lighting into your workspace in a sleek package.

For the detail-oriented office worker, such as those who find themselves reading large amounts of paperwork or engaging in precision work like architectural drawings, having a well-lit workspace is important, and the focus area of that light may need to be changed frequently. A bright secondary source of light like the Element Disc will not only provide the flexibility required by these tasks thanks to a highly adjustable pivot arm and twenty different mounting options, but it will also provide focused light where it’s needed, at a much lower cost than overhead lighting.

Like all of Humanscale’s LED task lights, the Element Disc light utilizes state-of-the-art dimmable LED bulbs to provide warm, glare-free light from a single, super thin light source thanks to Humanscale’s new Thin Film LED technology. This allows the Disc to not only create a clean, focused pool of light, but also means that it will only cast a single shadow, which helps reduce eye strain. When you’re not at your desk, the Element Disc’s passive infrared (PIR) sensor allows it to shut itself off automatically, and turn itself back on when you return at the same brightness you had originally left it at.

Combined with the exceptionally low power draw of the lamp, the Element Disc not only provides better light than traditional office lighting, but it does so at a much lower cost, with bulbs that use as little as 10% of the power required for an equivalent incandescent bulb. These bulbs last up to 50,000 hours before needing replacement. That’s equal to 5.71 years of constant use!

Of course, my favorite thing about the Element Disc light is the design. I’ve always loved Humanscale’s modern designs, and the Element Disc is no exception. The Thin Film LED bulb technology used in the Element Disc allowed Humanscale to drastically scale down the thickness of the lamp head, allowing it to be easily folded away when not in use. The Element Disc was also designed to be environmentally friendly - the lamp is made of 56% recycled content, and the aforementioned dimming controls and low power draw drastically reduce its overall carbon footprint.
