Stand and Stretch at Work: How Movement Improves Comfort and Productivity

Here at Human Solution, we believe it's important to do everything we can to help you stay healthy, comfortable and fit at the work place. We offer a number of standing desks, ergonomic chairs and other items that help you do just that. In the spirit of our mission to keep you comfy and healthy as you work, we've compiled some resources you can explore at the office that will help you:

  • Tone your muscles
  • Promote upright posture (and look 10 pounds leaner)
  • Increase productivity
  • Improve concentration and lessen fatigue
  • Decrease your risk for fractures, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, and a host of other neck, back, and even pulmonary issues

You don't have to skip lunch for spin class, nor do you have to fall victim to what some are calling the "sitting disease". Simply changing position and moving throughout the day will provide significant changes! To counteract work-related overuse pain and stiffness, add frequent "recesses" to stretch or walk to keep your limbs limber.

Your choice of office furniture and accessories is essential to your goal for more movement. Adjustable height standing desks and ergonomic stools are all great ways to incorporate a variety of positions into your day. (Two of our top stool recommendations are the Varier Move Standing Stool and the Via Swopper Chair.) I have a standing desk, and I often fidget, change the position of my feet, and better the posture of my shoulders. I've found a dramatic difference in energy levels between sitting and standing. All of this contributes to the health and comfort of my muscles, joints, and bones.

If you think you'll have trouble standing for part of the day, try an UPLIFT desk mat as a simple solution. It supports your feet (even in heels!) and improves your posture. These sturdy and liquid-resistant mats are fantastic for work spaces at home, the office, or even the kitchen.

Aristotle noted that, "We are what we repeatedly do." If you are locked in one position (particularly seated), your muscles will lose their shape or your joints will ache due to repetitive motion. Take a break each hour to work out knots in static muscles and you'll feel more agile and gain perspective on your day. Check out the following lists of at-work exercises. You won't break a sweat, but your body will thank you:

For those who like to bounce and add a bit of energy to their work, the Via Swopper is a popular stool.

Using a combination of ergonomic office furniture and at-work exercise is the key to combating the effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
