I've become something of a treadmill desk enthusiast in the last month or so. I typically spend at least two hours walking while working every day, usually racking up a solid four miles or more by the time I leave. Naturally, a lot of customers who come into our retail showroom while I'm walking on the treadmill will ask if I find it easy to stay focused while walking at work, and my answer has always been, "absolutely."
However, you don't have to take my word for it. Scott Douglas with NBC News recently reported on a new medical study which found that over the course of a year, employees who switched from a sitting desk to a treadmill desk saw no overall decline on their work performance. The real surprise? By the end of the study, workers on treadmill desks were found to be exceeding their old performance averages.
Of course, there's more benefits to working at a treadmill desk than just improved work efficiency. Similar studies have shown that breaking up the monotony of all-day sitting can help fight chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease, and many users also report having improved focus and more energy during the day. Using a treadmill desk can also help you lose weight, the study I mentioned above showed that workers using treadmill desks lost an average of 3 lbs by the end of the year.
If you're looking to get healthy and active at work, what are you waiting for? The only thing you risk losing is weight!
