The new Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4: Right Hand Wired Mouse VM4R offers new features that add to the legend of the popular Evoluent vertical mouse design. Evoluent Vertical Mice VM4R now include a more contoured shape to better fit users' hands, the option to change cursor speed without changing your grip on the mouse, and a sleep mode to conserve notebook battery power.

The Evoluent Vertical Mouse is by far our best selling mouse and represents excellent value. For starters, it is the only ergonomic mouse approved by University of California at Berkeley. The Evoluent Vertical Mouse 2 was evaluated in 2007 by a team at the health services clinic in UC Berkeley, including medical doctors, physical therapists, ergonomists, and administrators. It was found to be comfortable and easily adapted to, and the Evoluent Vertical Mice promote a neutral wrist and forearm posture. It is the only vertical type mouse approved for staff use within UC Berkeley and for sale in the campus store.

Features - Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4: Right Hand Wired Mouse VM4R

  • Design is more comfortable & carefully sculpted for uncompromised comfort
  • Larger flange for your pinky to rest and relax on while mousing

  • Evoluent Mouse 4 is made from 30% recycled plastic
  • Illuminated features turn off to indicate when the mouse is in sleep mode

The Human Solution requested that the creator of the Evoluent Vertical Mouse give us his perspective. We met up with him at the the 2008 National Ergonomics Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas and filmed this live. This video review will show you the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 3 in action, and its innovative design is explained by the man who designed the mouse. Enjoy.

The Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4: Right Hand Wired Mouse VM4R features six easily programmable buttons which can function differently in different programs. For example, you can program the same button to mean "double click" in one program and "back" in another.

The vertical mouse is sized to fit most people comfortably; your thumb opposes your finger action so the mouse doesn't move sideways when you click the buttons.

The Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4: Right Hand Wired Mouse VM4R is designed to encourage an arm neutral position, much like a handshake. Many users find this completely eliminates their wrist pain.

By comparison, an ordinary mouse twists your forearm into an unnatural and uncomfortable position- especially if you spend long hours at a computer. A small lip on the VM4R keeps your little finger from dragging on the mousing surface.

Evoluent Vertical Mouse VM3 and VM4

Professor Ergo's Thoughts:

Simply put- when users try this mouse, they love it. We have sold this mouse for years, and no other ergonomic mouse or input device has had nearly the positive consumer reaction this mouse has had. Over half of our staff uses this mouse for four main reasons: it is easy to use, feels good in your hand, works well, and helps reduce fatigue and pain in the wrist and hand. When a customer calls and asks for an ergonomic mouse they can try, I show them the Evoluent. We often recommend the Evoluent mouse in combination with the pronation-reducing Goldtouch or Kinesis keyboards as an excellent ergonomic keyboard and mouse combination.

The best, no less
November 22, 2013
Love it. I had been using Evoluent's wireless vertical mouse and loved using it. I've had two of them and after the second made the switch to the wired version. The problem with the wireless version is that it is relatively easy to break if you drop it (and yes I can be clumsy sometimes). I'm not having any issues with the wired mouse (I haven't dropped it, but the construction seems more solid and the innards less sensitive to bumps and knocks). And I really don't mind it being wired.

Evoluent Vertical Mouse - Wired
October 27, 2012
Why did I wait so long? I love it! It has been a 'miracle' help after carpel tunnel/wrist surgery. And I no longer have a caloused little finger. The touch is light and the cursor steady. Too bad for others that one cannot see/try it in any retail store. Well worth the investment.

Warning to Mac users!!
March 14, 2012
I recently purchased this mouse in an effort to reduce pain from tendonitis in my right arm. I am a graphic designer at a busy book publisher and have uses a mouse 40 hours a week for the last 15 years. Because I use a Mac and the manufacturer offers a driver for Windows only, I had to download shareware from USB Overdrive to enable programming of the buttons. The mouse ships with only a card that gives tips on holding it properly, how to sit while using it, and Windows install directions. The button diagram on this web site and the button descriptions provided by USB Overdrive are completely different. It takes a bit of trial and error to figure out which button is where. For example, the shareware lists one button as "Left Button", but come to find out it is actually the topmost button on the right side of the mouse. Go figure. It was frustrating but I finally got the buttons programmed for my needs. Once this was accomplished I found the mouse easy to use. The mouse has more programmable buttons than I need, but I may find uses for them in the future. Too soon to tell if it will help my tendonitis.

Airobic Quill v Evoluent
September 30, 2011
I had the Airobic mouse, the big white one, for about 3-4 years and then it started having connection/mechanical problems. No complaints about lifespan of the Airobic mouse. No complaints about ergonomics. Never had any discomfort etc. Two months ago I replaced it with the Evoluent Vert mouse 4 (lawyer so lots of internet clicking and word processing, no gaming). Operation is satisfactory, the double click button is hit or miss, seems to depend on what program you are clicking within. Nice feature when it works. Handles great compared to the Airobic which is clumsy. But the Airobic is clumsy with a purpose. By keeping your hand in that big cradle it keeps you from whipping your mouse around with your wrist. Two months in with the Evo and I can feel all kinds of symptoms of overuse or whatever coming back (I don't know anything about the medical jargon just that the discomfort from finger to elbow is slowly appearing once again). The Evo is no doubt much more ergonomic than a regular mouse and easier to use than the Airobic but my goal is to avoid injury and two months in it seems to be failing in that respect. Keep in mind that if you get the Airobic it will seem awkward to use but it has absolutely kept my finger2arm healthy for the last 3-4 yrs. Three stars compared to a reg mouse (one star for reg mouse), Airobic 5 stars for doing the real job of keeping one healthy.

This is good in concept but too heavy. It still causes shoulder issues. I had to stop using it.

Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4
September 18, 2011
I've tried track balls and other ergonomic mice, and this is the best by far. Not only is it vertical, the extra buttons and flexible settings create many alternatives to mousing. I am recommending it to colleagues and buying them for my staff.

No Pain!!!
July 18, 2011
I have Rotator Cuff problems. Excessive repetitive movements = pain not just in the shoulder but from the wrist on up. I can use a regular mouse for short times....kinda slows down my work output & game play. This mouse has reduced the problem - even if my shoulder is hurting before starting my work the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 = no additional discomfort in the wrist & elbow!!!

Great Power
July 15, 2011
This thing is fantastically flexible. It's a great mouse for work or gaming. I gave it four stars instead of 5 because (1) the optical inner workings require a mouse pad or other non-reflective surface: it's not as forgiving as a laser mouse; and (2) the position is not as comfortable as my 3M pistol grip ergonomic mouse. However, the 3M is not nearly as flexible - 3 buttons, no wheel, not programmable. If the position were changed to be a little more like the 3M, I would give it 5 even with the optical mechanism instead of a laser. The pinky shelf is excellent. The DPI adjustment is excellent. I wish I could program the thumb buttons to move the DPI up and down so I didn't have to change grip to make DPI changes on the fly.

Mouse works great
June 21, 2011
This mouse definitely took me some getting use to. Very awkward at first. After the first week or so it was much better and it has definitely decreased the pain in my thumb. Its not very easy to use with a wrist mouse pad. I agree that the shiny thumb part is a bit over the top but all in all it works very well. I have even suggested it to a co-worker.

Still learning...
May 30, 2011
but so far this seems to truly relieve the stress ordinary mice cause. I do agree with others who suggest a less glossy finish and critique the very bright illuminated logo--just one more unnecessary obstacle to a darkened room, when one wants it.

Evoluent VM4
May 11, 2011
1. Ergonomically, the vertical aspect of the mouse is really easier on the wrist -- helps me a lot. 2. The thumb rest gets very slippery if your thumb perspires even in the slightest. Makes it hard to use. Would have been better if it were the same material as on the EV-3. 3. The bling of the chrome thumb rest is very distracting. Would have been ideal if it were just a matte dark color. 4. The bling of the bright Evoluent logo light is even more distracting. I'm trying to look at the screen, not the mouse. What's more important, the advertisement on the mouse or the content on my screen? Pretty arrogant, especially for "ergonomic" product. No way to turn it off in software either. EV3 is therefore superior except perhaps for not having he extended finger lip.

Awesome product!
November 17, 2010
I have been using the Evoluent VM3 at work & I love it so I knew we needed one for our home computer. This mouse is so very comfortable and helps my arthritis feel less painful. The EVM3 that I use at work allows me to work more efficiently having two extra buttons. I like the infrared sensor and the way it tracks across the screen with very little movement. I would've preferred the EVM4 for work because it has an additional button & a pinky rest but I wasn't paying for it so I got one for home and it really looks as good as it feels. With the EVM4 it's easy to change the speed settings with a click & the green lights show setting. The Evoluent name in blue light makes it look great on our desk & really catches peoples' eye. The biggest negative for me is that it was made in China, I would have preferred to buy one made in the USA. Overall, this is a great product that I would highly recommend. It is definitely worthy! I am completely satisfied.

Great mouse. Buttons are nice. DPI change on top of mouse is nice. Mouse is a bit shiny in the thumb area (chromed out) but I still like it.

Nice feel but still too small for large hands
October 15, 2010
It looks nice, there's no problem with installation, and the software works without a hitch. Button action is quite nice and pointer movement can be adjusted to fit anyone's preference. But...I'm 6'7" with very large hands and this mouse (like every other mouse I've tried) just isn't large enough. Also the finish on the buttons is too smooth and glossy. It doesn't allow your finger tips to breath and they can start to feel clammy. Think leather seats in the summer. It would be better if the buttons had a flat slightly textured finish like most hand held devices. My quest for the world's largest mouse continues.
