I Hate Going to the Gym, So I Exercise at Work

I hate going to the gym. Seriously. Hate it.

It’s not the gym itself that I hate, really, it’s the time it takes to change into my gym clothes, lace up my not-so-Nikes, and drive there after work. For a guy like me, who is a little overweight, overworked, and struggling with high cholesterol, preparing for an hour-long workout at the gym can seem just as difficult and strenuous as, well, an hour-long workout at the gym.

Forgive me if I sound lazy, it’s just that … yeah, OK, I’m pretty lazy. Staying healthy and getting fit is important to me, but it’s hard to find the motivation to go to the gym even a few times a week. I feel pretty beat after a busy eight-hour day at work, and when I get off work all I really want to do is go home, order some food, and stream Breaking Bad on Netflix. For, like, hours.

I haven’t cancelled my gym membership yet. Even with my bad, lazy attitude, I still manage to make it over there at least once or twice a week, which is better than never going at all. And these days, going to the gym once or twice a week is all I really need thanks to my treadmill desk at work.

Yep, Human Solution office is stacked with treadmill desks. I got mine about two weeks ago, and after staring at it in fear and trepidation for a day or two, I finally started using it. And guess what? I love it.

A treadmill desk is a perfect solution for someone like me – a guy who needs to get in shape, but who struggles to find the time and motivation to go to the gym every day. The way I figure it, I’m already stuck at my desk all day, so it makes sense to hop on the treadmill desk for a few hours, which is positioned only inches away from my chair, and walk while I work.

Having a desk treadmill at work makes working out and exercising easy and convenient, two words I have never used to describe going to the gym. I don’t waste time every day getting ready to go to the gym or driving there; I have a gym at the office, where I spend most of my time every week. And the best part is that I don’t have to put everything on hold in order to work out. All I have to do is raise my adjustable height desk, move my keyboard, mouse and computer monitors over to the right, and start walking on the treadmill. I’m burning more calories than ever at the office every day while getting work done (and getting paid).

I still hit the gym once or twice a week, but I don’t feel pressure to go there every day after work, especially on the days I rack up more than 6,000 steps or more on my treadmill desk. That’s a lot of steps taken, and a lot of calories burned, all while working at the office!
