How to Stay Ergonomic at SXSW

Posted by Human Solution on Mar 10th 2015

Once a year, Human Solution's hometown of Austin, Texas turns into the massive traffic jam, open bar, TED Talk, and adult Disneyland known as South By Southwest. This year's festival will be the biggest yet, as luminaries from the worlds of technology, journalism, music, film, TV, and gaming come together to show off the latest developments in their fields. Even your favorite ergonomic experts will be taking part in the festival this year. Yes, in case you didn't hear, HS will have a booth at the SXSW Gaming Expo showing off the ways an UPLIFT Desk can help you play video games in a healthier way.

However, for attendees, the SXSW Festival can be a grueling, physically taxing experience. And if you aren't feeling your best, it'll be impossible to take advantage of the great networking opportunities, absorb the latest ideas, watch the newest buzz bands, or enjoy that fifth free Lone Star. Fortunately, we're here to help. With these simple ergonomic tips, you'll be able to get the most out of this year's SXSW!

Get Used to Standing All Day

At SXSW, you'll spend a lot of time standing or on the move. Especially on days when I do the music festival, I'm spending 12-14 hours standing up or walking. This used to be way more difficult for me, but with my UPLIFT Treadmill Desk, that's no longer the case! By standing and walking for portions of my workday, I'm more prepared than ever to face the gauntlet of South By Southwest (not to mention that I'm in better shape thanks to burning 50 more calories per hour by standing!).

But Don't Be Afraid to Rest When Needed

That said, standing all day can cause its own issues. However, anyone who has been to SXSW knows that empty seats can be tougher to come by than free tacos. And, if you've been waiting for multiple hours to get into a mega-exclusive event, you can't exactly take a break. Fortunately, the Focal Mogo Stool is the easiest way to take a load off. Focal calls this stool "the human kickstand" because it lets you lean and relax while on-the-go.

Get Your Ergonomic Keyboard to Go!

Lots of people will be using laptops or tablets to file stories, update social media, or generally get work done while on-the-go at SXSW. However, standard keyboard designs can cause carpal tunnel or other repetitive stress injuries. Fortunately, our most popular ergonomic keyboards have travel versions that let you stay healthy even when you're away from the office. Typing away on a Goldtouch Go! Bluetooth Keyboard or a Kinesis Freestyle2 Bluetooth Keyboard will keep your fingers and joints healthy while you're live-blogging that keynote address.

These ergonomic tips should be enough to get you started. Don't forget to stretch regularly, pace yourself, and, most importantly, don't leave home without your UPLIFT Koozie! Here's to a fun, safe, and healthy SXSW for everyone. See you on the other side!
